As is customary every year, the faculty and students at George Walton Academy honored veterans of all wars on Friday, November 8, 2013, and thanked them for their service.
The annual celebration takes place in the Nicholson Center of the school and is one of the most celebrated events of the year, according to Dessa Morris, marketing director for GWA. Veterans, many of them family members of GWA students, were treated to a coffee and donut breakfast before the program. The program began with the Posting of the Colors, Pledge of Allegiance, followed by an opening prayer by Abigail Bradley.
Students from GWA’s concert and marching bands as well as the High School Choraleers and Middle School Meistersingers performed various patriotic songs.
A Veterans Day video highlighted veterans associated with the school before Steven Whitley, associate headmaster at GWA, recognized members from each branch of the military. There was hardly a dry eye in the house when it came time to thank the World War II veterans. A WW II veteran in the front row made his way slowly to a fellow WW II veteran a few seats over. The two embraced and shook hands before he returned to his seat.
“This gets me every year,” a tearful Morris said at the end of the celebration.
