Monroe fire displaces 9

A fire at 505 Harris St. in Monroe in the early morning hours of November 15 displaced nine people, including five children, according to Lt Bill Owens with the Monroe Fire Department.

“The Red Cross is helping with housing for them at the moment,” Owens said, adding that nobody was injured. “Not from inside the home or members of the Fire Department.”

Owens said somebody inside the home awoke in the early morning hours, realized the house was on fire and was able to alert everybody to get out in time. He said crews battled the fire and were still putting out hotspots at first light. Owens said the home is considered a total loss.

At this time it is not known what caused the fire and Owens said he is not sure whether or not the home was insured. He said he thought that the homeowner was one of the occupants, but was not sure.

“The fire is still under investigation at this time,” Owens said.

It also is not known at this time whether there is any community effort to help the occupants of the home, especially over the holidays. Monroe Local will update with any further information in this regard.

In the meantime, the home has no trespassing signs posted and the investigation into the cause continues
