Possible tornado brings down trees, wires in Walton County

Walton Fire Rescue was kept busy with storm damage shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday when heavy storms came through the area bringing down trees and wires. According to Capt. Jeff Allen with WCFR, the department began receiving calls for wires and trees down in the Mt Vernon area shortly after the storms rolled through.

Although it will need to be confirmed by the National Weather Service, Allen said it could have been straight line winds, a downburst or possibly even a small tornado.

“The area around Snows Mill Road, Jim Dawes and Bethany Church Road just south of Highway 78 seems to be the most heavily impacted,” Allen said. “There were some structures that sustained damage, but we received no reports of injuries.”

Allen said that The Georgia Department of Transportation was notified of the damages, but the roadways were cleared by Walton County Roads and Bridges. He said WCFR also had to contend with some small fires, one when a hay bale caught alight as a result of a lightening strike.
