If you see a lot of emergency vehicles at Walmart in Loganville Saturday morning, don’t panic. It is an emergency of a different kind. While local public safety departments are used to responding to emergencies, the one they are responding to on Saturday is one they look forward to all year.
The Loganville Police Department, Walton County Sheriff’s Office and Loganville Fire Department are joining up with Church at the Grove and Walmart for the annual Shop with a Hero. This is a collaboration to meet a practical need in the lives of children in the community while bridging the division that often exists between children with needs and members of law enforcement.
School counsellors evaluate children who may be considered “at risk” and those children are each paired with a local member of public safety. They are then given a $100 Walmart Gift card and will have an opportunity to shop for Christmas gifts for themselves and for family members while being accompanied by the member of public safety. The gifts are then wrapped by volunteers and snacks are provided for the children and their family. This events allows more than 100 children who may not otherwise be able to experience the joy of giving and receiving gifts this holiday season. They are also able to experience the love and compassion of a caring community.
