Wishing you a Happy New Year as we look to 2017

When we do our Top 10 Stories of a year, it is usually filled with the bad news, the tragedies, the wrecks, the not so happy stuff. But every year, buried in our pages, are stories of triumph and hope and wonderful community support.

These are the stories that make us proud of where we live and of the people who live around us. This year we all shared in the struggles of Zoie Sellers and her family as this young girl battled leukemia. The community rallied and raised thousands of dollars to help her family. I am happy to report that the year ended with this wonderful Facebook post showing a positive diagnosis as she heads into 2017.

This summer, a group of animal advocates began the Monroe Community Cat Project with the hope of saving some of the feral and stray cats who make their home on the streets and just last week they trapped their 100th cat. These cats are spayed or neutered and either adopted out or returned to their neighborhood where they are taken care of by animal lovers, but no longer are able to increase the population. This and other local animal advocate groups, such as Walton Animal Guild, take great care of the wellbeing of our local four-footed residents.

While much of the country struggled with disputes between police and citizens, Monroe had a peaceful Black Lives Matter Rally on the Historic Courthouse Square with mutual respect shown for the citizens’ First Amendment Rights as well as for the work of law enforcement. And members of our local public safety rallied just last week to make Christmas special for a local family in need.

It is stories like these and so many more that make our community one to treasure, and it is being able to cover these stories that makes Monroe Local News a true labor of love for me. I wouldn’t change it for the world.

So as we look forward to 2017, we would like to thank the community for the tremendous support over the last year. We look forward to continuing this journey as we grow together in the upcoming year.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Happy New Year! May 2017 bring with it health, happiness, peace and prosperity for our community and all who call it home.
